This is a shot of the Korean bell in San Pedro. I decided to go black and white. I cropped a little and set the horizon to the rail instead of the bottom of the structure, Soften a bit in Photoshop and I got a lucky with the birds. Didn’t know what to do really so I just shot the first thing that came to mind.

greetings from the critique club:

i think the asian influence of this shot is a great take on "zen." however, the number one thing that killed you here is the lack of focus in the shot. with a f-stop of 9, you should have been able to get pretty crisp, sharp lines in at least part of the image and i just don't see that here. focus is almost the first thing most voters look for, so i don't think the "soften" helps you here.

the other thing about this image that strikes me is the lack of contrastiness™. the tones are muted and pretty flat...i'd like to see you try to use more of the light to dark range especially in the part of the image that is stone. the overall gray doesn't do much to make the image pop.

Seems a bit hazy to me. The image has a quiet serenity to it, that unfortunately is disrupted by the museum-like barriers. Not your fault, but it is a bit distracting. Nice photo.

A bit soft and the composition doesn't seem balanced to me, though I can't offer an idea of how else to compose it.

this is a great shot, but wheres the bell?

I don't like the black and white conversion here. The object you photographed has vibrant colors and dulling those with black and white doesn't help.

Great shot. Korean buddhism certainly knows zen. But where's the bell? lol...

Anyway, nice minimal use of color and nice subject. Great job!
