Challenge: Zen Photography (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III
Location: Hatfield, UK
Date: Jul 30, 2006
Aperture: f8
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/1500
Galleries: Emotive, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Jul 30, 2006

Shot with my 75-300mm zoom with the excellent 250D close up lens.

Some may think this is a studio set up, but the flower came out so subtley, just slightly beyond focal length and lent a painterly feel to the photo as if an illustrated backdrop. I would have liked a little more detail in the foreground flower and towards the back.

For me this is true harmony of nature - the perpetuation of a prehistoric, near perfect partnership between insect and flower. I hope it's a relationship that will long outlive the flawed blight of Earth that is mankind.

This will probably bomb because of the subject, lack of wow factor and focus junkies.

I missed this when voting but I like it very much.I think the contrast in sharpness between the hoverfly? and flower gives an etherial quality to the image.
Would love to have seen this in colour...that may or may not have added to it`s overall quality but for what it`s worth,I feel it would probably have increased your vote.

Good work Jon........ as always.

I love this one. It was one that you had to take more than the usual DPC 2 seconds to appreciate, and for those of us that did that, it was very rewarding.

Wonderful capture with great composition. I do wonder though how it would look in color, but I do very much like this b/w version for the challenge. 9

good still motion and difficult to achieve, why not in color?

Never thought that I'd be giving a 10 for a shot of with a bee and a flower in it: this is, generally speaking, one of those subjects where it's difficult to do anything interesting, creative. This shot is quite an exception. Fantastic use of DOF, a very appropriate b&w conversion, and a great composition. Not sure whether this fits in well with the challenge topic. But a 10 nevertheless.

I would have liked this 100% more without the bee. It is distracting, and it's movement disrupts the serenity of the photo. I love the flower and tones of this photo otherwise. Great job from the 'Great Job Baggie'!

a bee seems too "busy" for zen but then again I have no idea what zen is supposed to be. anyway I like the image, the low contrast and bw works here.

this is quite nice. I like how you have the sharp contrast between bug and the soft flower. it's not my art...but i would have liked to see more breathing room around the bug.

Nice shot and probably no easy feat to capture it. Would like the flower to be sharper. As it stands with the bee so razor sharp, it appears to be hovering a good distance more towards the viewer than the flower it is apparently trying to get to. The whole image begs for increased contrast as well. This image does give a sense of harmony, though at the same time it does not give me a sense of serenity. Nice bokeh, and I think the grayscale works well. Nice job, 5.
