my desolation entry with some more extreme curves done to it. and a tiny bit of masking on the darkest parts

The contrast here conveys a real sense of nothingness. It'd be great if you could remove the fences on either side... but that'd be a load of work I'd imagine.

I think this higher-contrast version conveys "desolation" better.

I'm starting to get an idea of what high contrast does: it takes whatever message or emotion you're trying to convey and makes it starker.

In this case, where the message was abandonment, I think the high contrast version is more powerful. The brighter sky is even more different from the building and the shadows virtually scream "hidden secrets from long ago."

Just a thought, but I wonder if there is any way you could get rid of the stuff at the side of the building -- make it look like it is out by iteself with nothing around. I like the windows and doors here -- each one has become different.
