Challenge: Insects (Classic Editing)
Camera: Nikon D100

There were a couple of shots I considered entering, but none that convinced me totally. I've submitted and unsubmitted this one and decided to give it a whirl anyhow.

I suspect the entries will be of high quality (considering the insect macros that people generally have) so I might not be faring too well, especially since part of the wings are out of focus. I did like the uncluttered background and how the dragonfly seems to be looking right at me. I wish I could spot-edit out the little dried brown bit on the top of the leaf and the two spots that are dustspots in my camera. Sigh :)

I'm secretly hoping to break 6 but realistically think I might be below that.

From the technical perspective, this was taken yesterday at the National Arboretum. I was so hoping the dragonfly would land on the lotus blossom nearby but of course it didn't do that. Shot with 2x macro lens attachment, cropped, levels adjusted, resized, USM.

11:03pm - just changed to the b&w version. It focuses the viewer more on the different textures and forms. Or maybe it's just that I like b&w a lot at the moment? I'm also hoping this will distinguish the picture from the crowd (unless everyone has the same idea of course :-P )

Wow Franziska, you amaze me every time with your images. B&W was an interesting look, to set you apart from the rest of the field. It could use more DOF, but overall GREAT!

I love the delicate wings, made more so by the duotone. 9

Good sharpness on the head - interesting choise to go for B&W, but it works. A bit more DOF wouldn't go amisee though.

I would have liked to see this photo in color.

Nice, sharp black and white photo. It doesn't really appear like it's looking at the viewer as the title implies, though.

Nice shot but I think the color is really needed here...

Great focus makes the composition so much better. The field of depth really brings the insect alive. Beautiful reflections.

The black and white tones have a very good range in your shot, but I think dragon flies tend to be very colorful and I think I wish I could see his colors. Good clear image tho. The leaf composition and depth of field are very well done.

Very nice, but I can't work out why this is in b&w. I'm sure I would have scored it more highly, as the lack of colour really doesn't suit this picture. 6
