My sister-in-law called and said she found a strange green bug with huge eyes. She wanted me to come and get it to take a photograph of it. When I finally was able to go and get it, it had escaped somewhere in her garage.

Her son saw it. It was on a yellow baseball bat, and it had turned yellow. That was perfect because I had a yellow pool toy and a yellow sheet of posterboard.

I never knew caterpillars could change color.

I went on www.bugguide.net to identify it. There was a green one with the same marking on the site and it was called a Papilio troilus.

07/24/2006: Ok. I did more research. He was green, and now he's yellow. They turn yellow right before they change into a chrysalis. I have him in a tank. He doesn't move now, and he's getting fat. I am hoping I can see him change. I will be checking on him regularly.

08/02/2006-Thank you everyone for voting on my bug. I can't get over he came in 10th place. This is great. I don't know if he will turn into a butterfly. He changed into a chrysalis, I think. He may have been disturbed too much. He spent a lot of time under my hot lights, but that's what the modeling industry is all about. Thanks again!

Probably the most interesting caterpillar face. Glad he made it to the top ten. Will check him out at the bugsite. (Any developments?)

I assume no more updates means the demise of Papi? Oh well - too bad. At least he had his 15 minutes of fame. More than most caterpillars get! Very nice capture.

This is great. Nice detailing and DOF with enough perspective to truly create a background. I wish he weren't quite so centered, but overall, well done.
