This is beautiful. I don't expect more focus from a shot like this - and the figures are naturally distorted by the backlighting. Although I probably would have done the same crop as you did - because I think it's interesting that the blue dissapates - I think that Levyj413 below has a solid suggestion about cropping just above that lovely dark blue. It might make the color progression more appealing to the eye.
Edit to add, I'm horrified at the score you received - seems totally undeserved. I don't understand the majority here.

| The tall crop pulled my eye into the dark area in the middle, esp. with the lighter part at the top. Wonder what it'd look like with that part cropped out? |
