The girl in the first photo is Susan, the daughter of one of my dragon boat teammates. She's a really neat, astonishingly mature and bright kid. She had brought the yellow paper parasol with her on Sunday and I just had to shoot it. After I began to feel a little sick in the 103*F heat while in the middle of the lake, I was rowed to shore and dumped into the lake to cool off, and she ran down from the picnic tables to shelter me with it. The whole "emergency" attitude of the team was overkill (I sensed where the nausea was going and decided to head it off before it turned into something more serious), but I let them do it so they would feel better. I looked up at her from my seat there in the water and asked her if she would pose for me as someone poured water down my back. She was an excellent model, too, and as it turns out she recently had done an immersion class in photography.

The Dragon Boat Festival will be held at Sloan's Lake in Denver on July 29th and 30th and will be an explosion of photo opportunities for any photographers who may attend - check out the Dragon Boat 2005 folder in my portfolio!

Ahhh, if only this had been advanced editing, I could have entered this one instead, but it had too many problems for basic editing.

rebecca, I like your outtake so much more. is that the basic edit I am seeing, because even that is worthy. I stayed as far away as possible from the beach challenge because it was tough out here in the mountains.

The perspective of your outtake is better, but the PP gives too much of a digital look. The original shot is perfect in that regard.

Great job! A very nice shot, nice use of light and color. Upping original score from a 4 to a 5.

Susan seems a bit overdressed for the beach. A nice portrait, but kind of ordinary for a challenge winner.

I would have put it in portrait and cropped more. Her head turned to her left and the camera on her left looking out at the water.

I think the yellows blew out a bit too much.

The lighting isn't very good. I don't like how the subject is much darker than the other parts of the photo.

There's a lot that works with this - the yellow umbrella diffusing the afternoon sun, the relaxed look of the model, the composition (model looking "into" the picture) and the texture of the sand to say but a few. Also great sharpness. Very, very nice.

I think a bit more beach would have made it a better photograph

The perspective on this one is what I like. Nice idea.

Different and nice. On post processing side I need the shadows need to be little milder to highlight the lady. Still a great photo worth 8 points :)

A nice portrait, though I am unsure of the camera position. It might be stronger to have been lower.

I like this photo and how you've composed it. I think it would have worked better if you had crouched down and taken the picture from either below her or just not as far above her. Would have given more persective on the shoreline running back into the distance and gotten more bang for the buck out of the nice position she is sitting in. Nice shot. 6.

it looks as though she has no texture to her?
too much neat image maybe?
or maybe my monitor is crap!!!
nice take on the challenge though.
but the water could do with some more color or movement or something.
