a large flylike insect with transparent wings;

Annoyingly Noisy is what I call him!

A pretty nice shot but such a ugly insect! I think this is why you didn't get a better rank but technically it should have rank higher to my opinion. Good shot.

Thanks for the votes and critiques.
I have an even greater admiration for macro photographers after this attempt. Yes, I did bring him inside and set him on the kitchen counter with a brightly colored flower to match his coloring. I agree, the eye should be in focus. I tried. He kept jumping off the counter! Shot about 10 shots and turned him loose.

The most important part of any subject is what? The EYES. Here they are out of focus. It doesn't look like a cicada in its natural habitat.

The shadows on the white background are a little distracting, as is the green blade comign straight at the camera.

Nicely captured. Did you pluck the flower and lay it on the white bckground? And the cicada let you do this? Either wow, or it's dead ;) Nice colors, and the focus is nice and crisp where it is. The hard thing with macros is that the DOF is so shallow and that you have to get it just in the right spot. In this case, I believe that would've been the eye, but that's OOF.

what stunning insects these are, the out of focus leaf detracts a little but I see no way you could have avoided it and still gotten the power of the shot

Intereting and colour ful subject. Compsootion is fine, but could really use more DOF - too much of the wing and (crucially) the eye are out of focus. Could you try a smaller aperture?
