Challenge: Abstract Food (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Nikon D50
Lens: Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 ED
Location: living room, Milton Keynes, UK
Date: Jul 14, 2006
Aperture: f5.6
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/160
Galleries: Abstract, Macro
Date Uploaded: Jul 11, 2006

This was inspired by a art article in Practical Photograpy magazine. I wanted to try it and this was the perfect chance to try out my new D50.

Frosted curved lamp shade was the base for the fork, which I taped to it. I backlit the shade with a table lamp. I used the widest aperture I could at the long end of the lens. It had to be long to allow me to focus on the end of the fork, and stop any shadow cast. Shot in RAW.

PP is PSCS:
Using the RAW converter plug-in in PSCS I changed the WB to Incandesent.
Covnerted to mono using Lab color/greyscale.
Used Hue/Sat to colourise with the blue tone.
Ran through NeatImage (my ISO was set quite high).
Re-sized, added border, saved for web, cross fingers and prey.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

This is a fun image, and I think it's pretty effective in trying to "taste" a bit abstract. I like the strong light from the left, which implied a negative space and endows by its overexposure in places the noodles with some special-ness. The fork is also well placed in the frame, on a third, and there is some negative space at lower right that helps to take my mind beyond the photo to think of profound things.

This is a high key photo, and a duotone. The high key does help sell the product, but the duotone, while creating some interesting lines and textures for the abstract food challenge, does little to make the noodles appetizing (of course, that was not your aim here).

The depth of field is well used, though you could even open the lens wider if you wanted to create more blur, and add more negative space--and hence more thought--to the photo.

All in all, this is a nice shot. Congratulations!

David

nice duotone used here. my only hiccup are the harsh lighting to the upper left. aside from that, it's a beauty of an image.

Terrific cookery book shot of spaghetti - but doesn't really fit the abstract bill unfortunately.

Not very imaginitive. Great photo. I love the old italian pizzaria feel.

the duotone was a good idea. it highlights the shapes well and makes pleasing color fields out of the shadow area.

yes but where is the oliva? the shot is good and I love tone of the shot and the composition. I think that there isn't a perfect focus(for me is difficult find the point of the real focus). the bit of over exposure on the top left corner is good for this image.
best regards
