- Cloned out a dark spot in the lower left corner.

- Curves applied selectively to brighten and darken different parts.

- Gradient Map used to darken tones a bit.

- Color Balance used to tint the image.

- USM applied selectively as a local contrast booster

- Smart Sharpen used selectively

- Sharpen Brush (from the floating panel) used a bit on the foreground branches.

- Paint Brush used to blacken edges and then faded a bit.

- Save for Web

Wow, this picture is really great. I love the processing and how our eyes are led to the top by the light. You are really good with duotones it seems! The vignetting really works here too, I'm not a big fan of it but I like it in this picture.

Thanks for the kind comments. I really like this one so I decided to re-edit the original to see what it would look like. I only wish I shot this for the desolation challenge. The most interesting thing for me is how the foreground and background trees that have fallen. The first one enters the frame on the left and the other exits on the right, which wasn't something I noticed when I clicked the shutter. :)

A beautiful black and white. I'm unsure if it was your original intention, but to me, you've really captured a sense of sombreness and defeat. A little like the last tree on a scorched earth that has just been felled. You've toned this one perfectly and done a really good job on the burning of the edges. A truly wonderful image.
