Once again I have out-thought myself. I really thought this was a neat little essay on the education system jamming kids into slots - I asked my young model to act uncomfortable, and pulled his shirt up to show how he had been man-handled into his appropriate slot.

The slot next to him waiting for the next test result was supposed to be the real "message" here. Well, it was deep when I thought it up in my little brain.

Not the best implementation of an idea either - I'll be the first to admit.

How did this wind up so low? It got an 8 from me. I loved the simplicity of the background and the way his gorgeous eyes seem to absorb the blue of the background and his shirt. I like the somewhat, shy, slumpy pose which really captures the awkwardness of the age (my guess between 10-13?). The slight distortion at the corner of the frame echoes the awkwardness (in a good way). I didn't quite get the title though.

this has one of the best titles ever. suddenly the photo is all about socialization, trying to force children into certain roles... and how this one doesn't fit... and is just waiting for the moment he can escape. This is achieved metaphorically by the juxtaposition of his wrinkled up, messy blue shirt with the hard smooth blue that surrounds him. the asymmetry adds to the theme as well. for one thing it shows the child is out of balance with the expectations on him. for another it shows us a slot without a child, reminding us that these slots pre-exist the children and the children are forced to fit into them. The child is therefore standing next to his slot as well as being inside of it. We see that the child is everything, and the role is nothing.

I like the different hues of the blues but I would rather he be looking into the image and with less tension in his shoulders.
