Challenge: Straight from the Camera (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Nikon D70
Lens: Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8D
Location: Bethlehem, PA
Date: Jul 2, 2006
Aperture: f/16
ISO: ISO 400
Shutter: 1/5s
Galleries: Still Life, Floral
Date Uploaded: Jul 2, 2006

Shot in a light tent with a black velvet background, on a mirror with water drops. Lighting was cheapo fluorescent tubes with an in-camera customer white balance. This was in the same series as the image submitted for the flower challenge, but it is NOT the same image. No post processing at all, other than resized and saved for web.

kteach, thank you so much for your critique. I agree with every point you made. This image was shot with the intention of being post-processed. It was an out-take from my flower challenge shots, and I only submitted it for the "straight from camera" challenge as an afterthought. I found some irony in your last comment, as the whole question of how much to post-process has been on my mind lately. My background is in graphic design, so I have over a decade of PS wizardry at my disposal. I've only taken up photography in the last year, and I think PS has been a crutch for me as I learn the mechanics of my camera. I'm going to challenge myself to stop relying on post-processing, and learn to make the camera my primary tool. Wish me luck!

Greetings from the Critique Club!

First Impression:
Interesting reflections and nice colors. A bit soft, and seems a little cramped at the top and bottom. But considering the challenge it was shot for and that no processing was allowed, a nice image.

Compostion/Background:
The black background really helps the colors of the flower to pop, and the mirror blends into the background seamlessly. There doesn't seem to be a lot of lines or focal points to help my eye to wander around. I'd like to see this with a bit more space around it too I think.

Technicals:
Nice lighting, and I like the way the drops are highlighted too. I like that the underside of the flower is also lit from the reflection of the mirror and that it didn't get lost in the black. The image feels just a little soft to me, so perhaps bumping up the sharpness in camera before shooting could have helped that.

Overall:
A nice shot, well done technically for this challenge. Shows that you have a good command of setting up the shot and not relying on post processing.

I hope you found this critique helpful. Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

nice job on this, it could be perfect, if not for the hot white spots on the yellow, yellow is a huge challenge to photo in good color! still very nice work.

Nice shot. A more original flower shot (if there is such a thing), than most others i've seen. Obviously could have been better without the bubbles in the flowers refelction.
