Being that this is a speed challenge - I decided to shoot the first thing that came to mind. This may be more on the serious side - but for some, sadly, this is a reality. Just for the record, in case anyone wonders, I didn't take this to be funny or anything, its a serious issue, and this is meant to be a serious reflection of that.

Getting the background out of the way - I used two different light sources in attempt to create an interesting dynamic with the shadows. At first I only had the lighting on the right...and it was just wasn't right. (overhead lighting with no shadows didn't look quite right either). I think that my old college book lends well to the "photojournalistic" aspect of the picture. I tried to make the negative space lead your eyes around the picture, for lack of a better description. And I placed 3 bullets in the picutre for symetry ( 3 objects, 3 bullets...)

It was fun to shoot - I took about 90+ pics of different angles and nuances (like the barrel in the bookbag and out, etc.). Any and all comments are welcome. Thanks for looking.

This photo is very powerful. I am in the NRA but not a gun toting nut (I live in NJ) besides, there is always going to be somebody that will force thier methodology down your throat(s). Most will either love it or hate it. I happen to love it. Both the guns and the photos.

Ugh, I can't believe everyone thinks my generation is made up of murderers.

Have you seen Bowling for Columbine? That movie was the best.

Well, I'm not too keen with seeing a gun in a "back to school" challenge, but I'm guessing that you're reflecting back to a "Criminal Justice" class or school. Even so, with the backpack there, it looks like a negative statement (gun in bag, take to school). Good luck.

Interesting Choice here...topical... time to face the reality ....guns don't sovle problems... we know that...as for the photo...work on the resizing..Hollow Points?? sheesh...to me ..this has struck a Chord...when I went to school... we fought with fists...... 8-/

My heart breaks to see a gun in a back to school challenge.

This is a really disturbing photo. It works - indeed, that it is so disturbing says much about how good an image it is. It's just a bit soft, which I think makes it stronger in this case, as an incongruity with the harsh subject matter.

Really tells the story of how our schools are getting to be.

This is portraying the wrong message. I think you could have found a better way to portray "Back to School."

I get the backpack, and the book, but the gun does not say "back to school" to me. Thank God for that!

Cute sense of Irony!

Definately scary. Good shot. The fold line on the top right and the spot to the left of that are distracting. The spot grabs my eyes and they keep going back to it.

I love the idea of this! Unfortunately, it's all too common these days. A wonderful picture! 10
