A retake of this one.

Totally different methods in making the shadow.
I would tell you how it is done if it wasn't for the two rules of photography.
1. Never tell your secrets.

(joke, I will share it later, maybe in the "How did they do that")

This is very creative! I don't know how you got the shadow to look like a girl, but I like it! This one is much better than the original - I like the brighter background. Picking thing - but if you would have looked cool if you swapped the swizzle sticks so that the red was against the white background, and the blue was against the red background.

Greetings from CTP2

Congrats on your personal best. The execution is much cleaner this go around. Also nice touch with that duality of fantasy vs reality conveyed with the background. That really hammered home the idea to voters who couldn't get it the first time. The only thing I feel held this back from winning was the reflections and flare. I'd probably just use backlighting only for this type of setup.

Hi Gunnar-

This is definitely an improvement upon the original. I think it would have scored better if the voters weren't getting to be so tired of the wine glass color refraction shots. Good job!

Hi from Cpt2!

This is a great shot!:) The shadow is much clearer now... I link it is great;) The reflection is noticeable on the top of the glass, but I don't think it affected your score...

Congrats on personal best...;)

Hi Gunnsi, Congrats for beating Croatia in the Brazil game, here is my critique on one of your (outstanding!) photos.

Well first, I wanted to comment on the original, but noticed that there were several things you wanted to improve on it, and I can see that you have certainly done so here.

For a start, for me the shadow is much more distinct and obvious. This probably has a lot to do with the b/g choice, although I guess the different lighting method also helps. While this type of b/g is somewhat of a cliche here on dpc, it forms only a part of the photo, and really adds to it.

I agree with another comment that the sticks should maybe be left out from the drink (unless they're needed for the shadow, of course). To some extent, they distract a little - the white/red refraction (?) in the glass would look much more effective I think.

Finally, there are a few areas of glare on the glass, although I"m not at all bothered by them. Perhaps you could use a softbox next time (in take 3?), but it doesn't bother me much at all.

Overall, this is obviously a good photo, and you know that. Thanks for sharing it!

Dave

Nice image and a great improvement on the original.

A pity that you don't feel able to share the details of how you created it. Keeping secrets certainly isn't one of my photographic 'rules', neither is it for this site I feel.

clever interplay, well executed. Is the shadow begind the left hand backdrop?

Very interesting. I like the complexity of the image and also that you don't notice the shadow right away (at least I didn't) :)

Nice idea. Only two small things: small reflections on the top left of the glass (working with glass is very difficult... a big softbox might do the trick, but you probably would loose the glass' shadow), and I might have chosen another color to contrast with the white. Or another (brighter) shade of red...

think i like your old one better.. im sorry! i think what makes this less atractive for me is the pins in the glass, i would have left them out. Just to much for me.

I give in. How'd you do it? Focus on the glass is just a little soft for mine.
