I didn't expect as I was finishing up my hike to see a vulture flying over head. Maybe an eagle or a hawk, but not a vulture. Then I really didn't expect to be able to pull my camera out of my pack and get a picture of him from that distance seeings how my oldest boy was on my shoulders as well. And then when I uploaded the photo I was surprised that the bird that is known for ugly looks graceful and beautiful in the air.

Hi! This is called Turkey Vulture or Turkey Buzzard (told by its wing and bald naked red head). I am studying it. If it is possible, would you please send a high resolution picutre of this to me at diccidwp@ufl.edu? I am doing research on its flight model and in this picture its tail contract. If you are so kind to do so, please also let me know the wind condition when you took this picture. Thank you very much!!

Thanks guys for the comments. Funny thing about this image is that it actually has a fraction croped off the top and that is it. I barely got this one in frame at all. The bottom wing is it! I was so surprised to see a big bird fly over head that I rushed my camera out snapped about 6 shots and then the bird was gone. I thought it was a hawk, but to my surprise when I downloaded the images it had a red face! It is a turkey vulture, a site that you don't see to often in these parts. I think I now have learned of a place where they live in the wild, and I am hoping to maybe grab some more shots like this (and better) soon.

I like the crop, good call going with the horizontal on the vertical subject. Most would not have done this. 8

I think this is cropped a bit tight - I'd like to see a little more sky at the tips of his wings - other than that I like it! Good idea too

I don't know about the frame... looks to jam in it... ... but nice capture...

Great photo of a hawk in flight. Not Sure how it's an unexpected find, but still a nice shot.

Nice shot, but I'd like to see it cropped differently
