From the Critique Club

First off I can't help but feel you may have entered this in the wrong challenge as a lot other commenter's have suggested. If so it is a shame because you have a great picture here that with a little more post processing would of made a great challenge entry. Even with your score be proud of your photo because it is very good.

Composition and lighting is nice and the dof is great. The bird is slightly soft focus but could of been enhanced in editing. The subject looks very good against the broken background. There is not much more to add that others have not brought to your attention. I find in this case not meeting the challenge really brought your score lower than it should of been.

Overall a very good photograph with a little more processing could of made it great. Also entering it in another challenge would of helped. I wish you the best in future challenges and I hope you find this critique helpful. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
regards,
SDW

Challenge related: The challenge called for an artificial light source, I believe the sun is a natural light source.

Technical: The photo is very good. I like how the bird is sharp and in focus compared to the water. There is alot of extra space on the left that could have been cropped out. Another option would to have put the bird in the top right corner, making it seem like it had more room to walk or placing it in the bottom left corner making it seem like the only place to go was into the water.

Did you post this in the wrong challenge?

Very nice bird, but I believe "Free as a bird" is a beatles single rather than a single light source ;)

Although not "artificial" I'm going to score it as if it was artificial light. I see other shots in this challenge using "flames" or "fire" as artificial light...but guess what...the sun is "flame" and "fire" !

This is a striking image, but it would seem the image was taken outside at high noon, and as such missing a prime component of the challenge, namely an artificial source of light.

Oops wrong challenge, but I like the effect on the water. Bird is nice and sharp too.

I like the smoothness of the water, but I don't see any artificial, single light source.
06/02/2006 04:46:39 PM
artificial light?
06/01/2006 02:47:12 PM
The challenge calls for artificial lighting. This does not meet the challenge I'm afraid ;( 4

Great picture.

Use a single, artificial light source to dramatically light the subject of your choice.

I don't feel this nice picture fits the challenge. Ther's no single artificial light source.

I think you wanted to submit this in the Beatles challenge.
06/01/2006 09:09:09 AM
Unless you are able to have a trained bird stand for you while you are adjusting the 18kw lamp you needed to illuminate while outside in the dark, this pix does not meet the rules. Artificial light, not natural light.

Nice shot of the bird - the color of the feathers work with the water. Is this natural or artificial light?

mmhhh.. I´m afraid you mixed up the challenge, that should apply for beatles songs... It could also be a single light source picture, but sun light seems to be always refracting all around. Anyway, nice shot!

Nice image. The bird is slightly out of focus though.

Wonderful capture of a seagull resting - beuatifully lit by the SUN - which is not really meeting challenge details that specify ONE ARTIFICIAL light source. Sorry but I have to know down this otherwsie nice image a point for not following the details.

Did you mean to enter this in the Beatles challenge? Looks to be sunlit, not an artificial light source.

DNMC, challenge required artificial light.

Is it under an artificial light source? 6.

Nice sharp picture - however, the light source was supposed to be artificial.

I don't think the Sun qualifies as an artificial light source.

This shot looks like it was done in sunlight, not artificial as called for in this challenge.
