A symphony of shadows and texures stared out from under a staircase at me as I was on a journey to document some local graffiti. An instrumental Beatles song was the perfect melodic mood for such a place to sit. Cry For A Shadow...

I thought that the stair shadows on the right looked a bit like bars for written music and the vine leaves were notes.

Adjusted the contrast in places and tuned up some of the colours in the leaves and red wall.

First time in years using a digital photo post-processing program so I stuck to simplicity. I prefer my shots raw anyhow.

Thanks, it was my first submission.

Hey there from the Critique Club

First of all, welcome to DPC. You have found a great community that often seems like a family that is far too close. You will love the site, you will hate the site, and you will most likely become addicted.

Camera Work/Technical: Your focus is spot on, and everything in the frame is nicely focused. Your choice of white balance also yielded very nice coloring and tines.

Lighting: Your lighting in this capture is very interesting. You made nice use of shadows to give the image a terrific textured feel. You lost no detail in the shadowed areas, but some of your highlights are just a touch overexposed. In an advanced editing challenge, I try to expose for the highlights, the dodge and burn areas that need work in post-processing.

Composition/Content: Your tilted composition works very well for this particular image, and the shadows provide some terrific leading lines that grab the eye and pull it through the frame. The stair shadows do indeed look like music bars, but I didn't notice it until I read your description.

My Opinion: I think that you really relied on your Photographer's Comments for this one to meet the challenge. Keep in mind that the comments are hidden until voting is over. The only visible elements are the image and the title. Voters on this site tend to like vivid colors, crisp focus, and third world models. Of course there are exceptions to the general rule, but look through past challenges and I think you'll see what I am speaking of. Again, welcome to DPC. I hope you decide to foot the $25 and join us as a Member.

NOTE.... I'm looking at the image first and tyrying to guess the title. If I can't guess, I can't give high marks :-(
