Shot at Barsana Dham's Mela Fair in Austin, TX. I wish I could have done something about that background but there just wasn't any angles to minimize that.

Post Processing:

The main thing done to this photo was the selective color adjustment. I toned down the color overall (reds and oranges were nuclear out of the camera). I also selective desaturated the cloth on the older woman to further enhance that old vs new contrast.

From the CTP MkII

First Impression: nice photo with a great concept.

Composition: wonderful, with rhythm, using thirds, repetition,... really good.

Subject: perfect. Very appopiate for the challenge.

Technical: focus is tack sharp. You use DOF very well, assuming you want leave mother's face a lit blurred. Colors of the daughter's clothes works quite well. The clothes of the mother, on the other side, are too gray for me.

Improvement: I think a bit more of saturation on mother's clothes would have helped. As you say in your comments, the BG is a bit distracting. The other thing is quite personal, IMO it would have been better with the mother completely in focus, but it's just an opinion.

Summary: Wondeful shot that I think should have scored much better for me. But maybe I'm too generous compared to the average voter...LOL

Hi Richard -

After reading your notes, I absolutely agree with your decisions with regards to color desaturation - very effective, and quite lovely. The background could be better ideally, as you say, but I wouldn't say that it truly distracts much from the women. Mom is a tiny bit out of focus, and I would have liked to see more clarity there. It was a good fit with the challenge, too. Nice work!

From the CTP MkII

First Impression: Hah, fun! 7, 'cuz they look silly.;)
Composition: Subject placing's fine. It's the cropping I have a problem with. It's a bit too thight, especially at the right of the photo. 5 or 6.
Subject: 8, because they're silly and silly's fun and I like fun so subject rocks.
Technical: I guess you went a bit too far toning down the colours, as the "daughter"'s garments lost their vibrancy. However, selectively desaturading the "mother"'s garments did good for your shot. So there. 6.
Improvement: A little wider crop, a bit more saturation on the daughter's clothes, explosions on the background, and it's a tenner.;p
Summary: Aye, it's a fun photo. It's what matters for me in the end.

From... darn.. now I can't remember the acronym... but the commenting club marquee II(as opposed to the Critique Club):

I really like this picture. Captures the cliche beautifully. The ligthing is good, and the skin tones look spot on. The only thing I don't like so well is that the mother is slightly out of focus. Then again maybe that was intentional, and could certainly work, making her look older and more 'washed out', not as young and vibrant as the daughter? I'm not sure I'd like that message though, given that I'm a mom Ü.

Comment from a member of your own commenting club :-)
First impression
1. Mirror :-)
2. Beautiful woman
3. Good natural lighting
4. Good focus and contrast on the yonger one
5. Cropping is good, making rule of thirds in action.
6. The colours are bright and alive!
7. Good choice of a Cliché
What could be better
1. Better focus on the older one
2. As you say, the background is a bit distracting and divides the picture in two. Giving this mirror effect so I am not so sure if it a bad thing after all.

Beautiful detail! Colors are very nice. I like the position of the heads. Would have been blown out if they were facing the sun. Very nice. 10

Beautiful - I wish the mother was a bit more in focus, though. The jewelry is fantastic.

Nice angle and repetition of lines. The contrast of color with youth and grey with "age" adds to the image. Background is a little distracting but sometimes that's hard to control in "capture the moment" shots.

I like this photo and it plays well with the title deeper depth of field to get both people in sharp focus would make this a much stronger photo.

Beautiful photo - I love the colors, especially that the younger woman has on vibrant tones and the mother has the muted lilacs. Great illustration of the saying.
