This is the first non-snapshot photo I've ever tried to do, so I'm a little nervous and excited to have finally gotten over my hesitation at learning a new artform. I have been watching this site over my boyfriend's shoulder for years now and have been amazed at the talent here. (now I understand the "drive" for new camera equipment and super expensive lighting)... :)

here was my first pic, but I like the non cropped one that I entered better

Geez, send some of that "raw" talent this way!

Would you post some of your outtakes so other newbies like me can see how you did your backdrop?

A budding talent for sure! Best of luck Amanda! :)

Congrats on an excellent debut shot! For me a lone 'old' paintbrush would have bumped this up even more.

yeah, I guess those brushes don't look so old...

First try or not, I think you did a fantastic job. This is v good shot. I would have guessed this would have gotten a 6 - I guess not quite old enough. Colours / idea / creativity / dof were all great tho. Well done!

NOT BAD for your first "non-snapshot" attempt. The lighting is actually good and the shot works well. Oh boy, if you get hooked, you're gonna be a threat ;-) Nice job.

Yay! I can't believe it... I said I would be estatic if I landed higher than a 4. I am also very happy that the suggestions that were posted were ideas that I had at least tried to do, so it seems that I wasn't completely in the dark. (lol... that was a pun; my "studio" consisted of three desklamps, with energy efficient bulbs equivalent to 100 watts each, a coffee table, and an almost too small piece of posterboard paper masking-taped down) :)

I took several shots from a lot of different angles and this one seemed to be the most interesting. (One of these days, I will get a membership so that I can upload photos). A view even just a little bit higher from above rendered the photo uninteresting, and a shallower dof was interesting enough, but made me feel a little dizzy when I looked at it. I also tried putting it on the only possible black background I could find in my apartment, which was useless because it was a textured, partly shiny leather book cover.

But anyway, the point of all this rambling was that I just wanted to express my happyitude and tell everyone who voted and/or commented on my photo thanx!!

Great colours and looks well used. Something makes me want to see more colours and less of the bright white background. Great image though!

This is an original image, and a clear communication. You might try using a shallower depth of field, which might imply more and let the view interpolate more. Nice work.

Great idea and well done. I guess my only suggestion would be a slightly higher point of view to see deeper into the paint pockets. Overall very nice. Bumping up.

Great shot. I like the contrast and colors, the DOF is great, and the lighting is just about right. Good job. Top 20.

I think the shot is amazing. But I'm not convinced that they are retired.
