Tyler- I love this because you have captured the "shit-tzu' at rest to perfection... a wonderful soft image of this great little dog ! just ignore all the critique you have- they don't know what they are looking at.

::: Critique Club :::

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

I'm sorry, but without any input from you in technical details or comments, it's just not possible to critique this image.

When we do a critique, we go past just the photographic result, that's what voters comments do. The critique looks at what you were trying to achieve, how you wanted it to look and what issues you had in getting the image captured and ready for voting.

First Impression - the most important one:
You have been bitten by the DNMC ... don't worry .. we all get that from time to time. I think for me the issue is more of where the focus of the picture is rather than that is a dog ... which btw is really cute and I hate dogs!

Composition:
This isn't too bad .. but here are some hints.

Composition is about leading the eye into an image (painting or photo). Research shows that the eye enters bottom left and travels up to top right ("Leading Lines Rule"). Once in there, the same research tells us that the eye finds comfort when the point of interest (POI) sits on a thirds line or intersection ("the Rule of Thirds").

Subject:
Meets the challenge .. but that is up to interpretation.

Technical (Colour and light):
I am not a huge fan of black and white .. especially of animals .. they have such wonderful colours from nature.

To grow its vote?:
Think inside the very tight sqare and don't challenge it!

Summary:
You done good ... you stirred up good comment.

Try staying a little safer till you build your confidence a little more .. it may help .. but then again challenge the sqaure and make it a triangle

If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via the PM system.

Cheers

Kari

Unfortunately, candids of animals are really not what I look for in a good candid. Animals are aware and both unaware at the same time of a photographer, nor do they care either way. Too easy, no comfort zone lost. It's a 2 for me.

No photo that has any number of decent technical aspects deserves a 2. Just because you don't think animals qualify as candid doesn't warrant an extremely low score for a good picture. If I were to say "I don't think crippled old men qualify as candids", I would still give you a 5 or a six since its an OK picture.

Next time have a little heart and don't vote someone down just because they have a really cute dog that doesn't give a shit if she gets her picture taken.

this is one of those shots that if i found it in a portfolio, i'd like it. for me, the technical flaws make it work. on the other hand, as a challenge entry, it's a horrible choice. seriously, if i took this shot, i'd absolutely love it--BUT, i'd never put it to a vote, especially in a candid challenge. more power to ya. if your score isn't where you would like it to be, you might want to read this thread.

I thionk this would be improved if we could see the dog's eyes - they are dark and don't have a catchlihjt to give them life, and the nose ssmes to be more in focus.

I think this will ge drilled because people don't like animals in candid challenges. This is candid though and people who vote this down fail to see the candid aspects of this stellar photograph. As Thomas Jefferson said, " That's a pretty damn good picture."

This isn't quite in focus, and with all the fur it's a bit disorienting...

I really like the composition but find the softness distracting.
