If you want the subject to stand out against the background, set a smaller DOF on your camera. Blurring the background in post processing usually looks clumsy and unnatural. 5.

One of the better done skateboard pics, due primarily to the balance of the skater and shadow in the frame, and the lack of distractions in the background.

I don't like the gaussian blur applied on the background, I think it ruins the shot. Other than that, it's very good.
