Trying something different. I'm bombing so badly on my most recent entries that I can't see the harm in experimentation.

Rotate
Crop
Clone minor distractions and blown highlights
Contrast Mask
Dodge
Burn
Levels
Curves
Desaturate

I've been stalking this tortoise for weeks and everytime I've seen him he's been head-first in the burrow.

When the texture challenge came up I felt he would be a good subject. Today (last day) I caught him out eating. He was moving so fast, that I had a hard time keeping him in focus with the long lense I was using. To top it off, it was midday and the sun was blaring! Not really thrilled with the shot I got, but it was the best of the bunch.

He-He. This IS a cool shot, and perfect for the challenge you entered it in. I enjoyed reading the story behind the effort it took to get it. I wish more people put some background info into their submitted images (I only do it once in awhile myself).

As for the image I think the harsh lighting may have helped some in this case as it tends to really enhance contrast via shadows. Those shadows are what brings out the details in this turtle's skin. The only item that jumps out to me as a distraction is the eye...it could be the color, but it looks a little blurry to me. It should be sharp looking at other areas of the image as the eye falls into the DOF range - maybe he/she moved the eye during exposure?

Anyway...overall, nicely done, and underrated! ;^)

This is an excellent shot! Very underrated in the challenge. The textures are fantastic. I like the close crop as well as the close in focus. Very nice composition. Eating adds a great element. Almost like 'you can take my picture, but don't expect me to stop eating.'

Ohmygoodness! I am speechless at how awesome this shot is for this challenge!!!! Normally, I might give it a 9 because it looks ever-so-slightly over-exposed. . .but this is such a stand-out and so incredible, no way would I give this one anything less than a perfect 10! Congratulations on this aMAZING photo!
