Okay, so not really odd....I don't think their even a couple. But yes, I actually staked out in front of various grocery stores in Pahoa. This was the best I could find :-P
Editing was really hard because the monitor on the pc broke and we had to use an old one that was very badly calibrated. I had to check back on the new mac to see if it turned out okay a couple of times, though there's still too much contrast and blown highlights.
Oh, well...er...it's high contrast...I did it on purpose.....yeah.

From the Critique Club:

First of all, this is the first time that I've drawn an image to critique from a photographer on my faves list. This is kinda wierd! ;-)

What I see here is a shot that has a whole lot of potential but has some issues...

Things I like: I love the right side of the frame. I don't know if these two women were together or not. It's hard to tell from this perspective, but it sure looks like they are. I think that it did meet the challenge in a way because you have the one person all dressed up like going to work and the other kinda grunged out. I love the contrast and choice of b/w (on the right side of the frame still). Exposure seems spot on, focus seems maybe a touch soft but still acceptably sharp.

Things I don't like: The left side of the frame does not fit the shot. It's not negative space. It has detail that you can't see, but it's not bokeh. It's extremely dark but has a dull gray line running up and down through it as opposed the lightness of the other half of the shot. It just doesn't seem to fit. Also, it looks like the two subjects are butting heads and this doesn't look so appealing.

What I whould have liked to have seen: If you could have move a bit to your left it would have seperated the two subjects and eliminated the butting of heads. I think (not knowing what was to the right) that it would have lightened up the shot. I am saying this however not knowing what was to the right of the two ladies. Their may have been more even more distracting elements than the aweful left half of the frame as shot...

Why didn't it score so good? I think there are a couple of reasons. Firstly the left half of the frame totally takes away from the shot. If I cyber crop the shot so it's portrait crop with just the two ladies it's much more powerful. Also I think it may be the stigma of what you are implying about the two people that you don't know. Most of the voters here are of a straight lifestyle. You are portraying by implication an alternative lifestyle that many won't accept. When you go this route (and it's not a sexy shot of two nekid chicks) it's probably gonna bomb in this forum. Wish it wasn't this way? Maybe. I'm one of those conservative types but try and keep an open mind. Can all voters? I'm not sure but don't think so...

Hope this helps. Honored to pic YOUR shot to critique.

Interesting candid. I like the duotone effect on it.

Not sure what is odd but I like the expression on the women.s faces, great clothes and your choice to make the shot sepia was a good one. I was going to say that maybe a tighter crop on the left but that would take the mystery out of it.. what is the blond woman looking at so intently?

??? I'm looking and looking but I don't understand the connection, or the title for that matter. A drug deal taking place? The women don't look all that different from each other --they both have a kind of arty-hippie vibe. Are they a couple and that is what is meant to be odd? These days a gay couple isn't an oddity to most people. I'm sorry, I'm just not getting it.

In terms of the photograph, as a street photo it would work better for me if it were clearer what was taking place and if we could see more of their faces.
