I'm nervous about this one. I hope my paternal instincts have not over-ridden my artistic instincts again. I like this image... but is it just because it is my daughter?

I shot this at a high ISO to try to create some natural, in camera grain... but it only hurt the image and I had to spend a lot of effort getting rid of it.

Lighting consisted of a weak room lamp behind, a flood light from above and an ex580 flash bounced off the the wall she is facing.

Processing: Crop, levels, contrast/brightness, Channel Mixer to b/w, convert to greyscale then duotone, resize, noise ninja, save for web.

There were several good pictures from this shoot... most with her smilling, but the serious look fit the duotone theme better.

Greetings from the Critique Club

Congratulations on a fine finish in this Challenge. 22nd out of 600+ is a pretty good ending!

Duotone treatment fits this image perfectly, as does the expression on your daughter's face. Those wide open eyes, wise beyond reason, are brought to the center of our attention with this technique. Interesting, I tried several different crops by moving the image around on my screen. While (imo) you went to the very edge with this crop, it quickly grew out of balance with a more pronounced one.

so, all in all, a great image, that shows the care and attention you put into it. You were quite well rewarded by our voters, and certainly have an image you, your wife and your daughter can be happy with.

First off let me say that I don't typically like facial skin that has been smoothed to the point where detail is lost however with the expression that kid has and those eyes and the duotone colors it all just works. Bumping up.

The lighting, the off-center composition, the facial expression...nothing is missing here. 10

Most of my photography is of my kids and family. I'm always trying to create or capture something unique or a little out of the ordinary....something like this! Great shot.
