Greetings from the Critique Club ...

Well, much of what I'm thinking about this shot has already been addressed in some of the comments below, but I'll echo my thoughts anyway.

It's technically a very well done shot. The leading lines work very well, the composition is perfect. I don't think the sharpness is off too bad, but F5.6 of f8 would have improved the crispness of it. A little more contrast would have been nice, but I wouldn't say it's bad as is.

At the end of the day, I'd say it's a great shot - there's just nothing to really "pull it out of the pack" during voting. Tough to figure out what the voters are going to like :)

Well done

The two things I liked best in this picture was the texture provided by the wall and the leading lines the wheel provides to axis. Your composition was smart... placing the axis at the rule of third location. The axis, itself, however, is not as strong a visual reward to keep the eye there.
The narrower DoF gives it a sense of being a little out of focus, but I dont' think it was. It has nice contrast... not over doing it.

So in general, I think it is a great picture and one to take some pride in. It will also be fun to "antique" it some with techniques not permitted for the challenge.

In voting I gave this a 6 which I see as my vote for a solid picture, but not an exceptional one. Often it is merely the subject that keeps from the 8-10 scores. I do like your subject here and the leading lines it provides. The duotone is well done and appropriate for the picture giving it a nostalgic feel. The focus could be a bit sharper; this is likely your using the 50mm at f/1.8. I love that lens, but it does soften quite a bit at 1.8. I usually see if I can get away with at least f/2.5 on that one. If you could use a tripod, I would have gone with f8 on this as there isn't really any part of the picture that would be enhanced by a shallow DOF. If you couldn't use one, I would have upped to ISO 200 or 400 and then upped the aperture. I see you were already at 1/50th.

I wouldn't be too disappointed with the score. 5.2 seems mediocre, but it isn't really. I think perhaps the subject, while I liked it, ultimately didn't "do it" for enough people. There isn't "wow" to it, which DPC seems to love. Keep it up! I think this picture shows you can easily do solid work.

I hope you see my comment as constructive and helpful.

My first impression of this image is that it is has a certain old feel flavor to it. In as much as the duotone color selection works for this entry, the image in itself does not hold my attention for too long. It might just be the POV you used or it could be that there are just way to many thing happening here. In as much as the textures add layer and depth to the image, it is also a bit distracting. The DOF could have been adjusted to isolate one from the other so that the other accents the major subject of focus. I think digital grain would also help this one if your intent was to go for the old image feel.

Cheers,

Rikki

Not too boring, as you suggested in the 'Got a 4.7-5.3' thread. I really like the composition of this picture, but I think it lacks contrast. That's all I can really suggest. I think the colour is perfect, it just needs deepening a bit to bring out the wheel.

There's something just so appealing about this. The old old look, and the tight close-up crop. The composition is interesting, and it works great for duotones.

This is technically a good photo but there's nothing really interesting about it.
