Thanks Marjo. All good points. Based on your feedback, I did the one thing I could do easily, which was to use PS to add more light to the rose. This is what I came up with.


The lighting I acquired is the cheep floodlight kind (stands, clamp-on lights, and metal dishes)... nothing fancy, but it works. I made a still-life backdrop out of a cardboard bankers box and black felt.

I really like the textures you've chosen. Not sure about the composition for stilllifes. I've not had much exposure to them. It feels cut-off to me. I would rather see a tighter framing while still getting a hint of the wonderful cracked paint texture from the outside of the box, the sand and flower or back off and get the whole box.
A real rose would work better for me, also. The lighting is nice and even and works for this look but is not what I prefer. I'd like to see more light on the rose. Perhaps a long exposure and paint with light on just the petals. Just my humble opinion.
What kind of lighting did you acquire?
