July 26 2004 - one year and one week later

I can't believe how bad this photo is. I just got my first digital camera and was as green as they come. I actually thought this was a wonderful photo at the time! Not only is it terrible, but I didn't even get the type of flower right. Those who commented were very kind and taught me the first of many many valuable lessons I have learned here.. and am still learning here.

Hi, Faye, from another Oregonian. I liked your idea, but those look like snapdragons, not foxgloves. I'll send you a pic of foxgloves if you like. Keep up your enthusiasm and if you'll use the good suggestions, forget the rest, your scores will rise. I promise!

next time it would make for a more intresting photo to pull the objects farther away from the wall and maybe pull back a bit to see the bottoms of the vases.

Looks too much like a quick snapshop. The subject is too close to the backdrop, and when using a flash it creates 'ugly' shadows - try moving your subject away from the back, or use a window/lamp as your light source. Also the placement of your subject is too centered - try different compositions. (just my thoughts)

i see what you're getting at. However this shot does not engage the viewer as there is nothing about the composition to draw one in. The items are too central and the angle is unimaginitive. By getting closer to your subject and choosing a more interesting viewing angle this could have been made more interesting. Do you need to see all of the flowers in the vase? You could have cropped some out in order to get more detail and texture. Otherwise just off-setting the vases to left or right would create more 'active' space.

Good idea. Compositionally, everything is right in the center with alot of unneeded space on the sides. the bottoms of the vases are cut off. Would maybe like a different angle to give it more power. And the light is pretty harsh and flat in places, takes away any punch to it. Maybe could have cast light on it from a higher angle and moved them away from the backdrop some to produce more shadowing. An idea

Nice idea, fits the challenge well. I would like to see this include the bottom of the vases, it looks chopped off. also IMO you need to control the light to avoid the harsh shadows on the background. If you move the background farther away from the subject and add light directly to the background the shadows will not be as sharp.

Nice idea - I think you should position your subject firther from the background and perhaps experiemtn with some lighting: those awful shadows really wreck this shot.

Very unusual idea...still pondering the meanin. Lighting could be better...lots of shadows, dark edges. Points for originality though. Thanks
