Challenge: Broken II (Basic Editing III)
Collection: Portfolio
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
Location: home
Date: Feb 7, 2006
Aperture: 11
ISO: 100
Shutter: 20 sec strobes

Date Uploaded: Feb 7, 2006

Held one egg on stick. The other already broken on table which is moved away while I make multiple exposure with egg on stick. Working in darkness with one blacklight as safety light. When through with multiple exposure you move table hoding second egg and one final flash. 20 sec exposure. Used curves over and over again to hide the semi visible blur left by the stick. Wore a black sweat shirt and painted stick, holding egg, with black magic marker.

Yes, the egg was broken as I went to boil it and I said, hey: I have the egg epoxied to stick in the basement, this would make a nice shot. 6 hours before challenge deadline. Of course, I kniw I would get hit because the egg appears to be breaking.

I do love this shot, I like all the aspects you captured. However, I voted it a 6 and I will tell ya why: The blue dish, now if you had used a nice stainless steel frying pan it would seem to work better together, and make more sense. Its is a great effect...

Brilliant shot Dan....what a wonderful illusion of the journey of that egg. To my mind this shot does meet the challenge as the egg in the place is most certainly broken. You inspire me!

I would give this shot as a photograph a 10. Unfortunately, I doubt the egg was "found" broken so prettily on a plate. I give a good shot that DNMC a 3, so that is what you got from me. Some people give DNMC shots a 1, and likely that is where the ten 1's came from.

Great job again. You are consistantly near the top and always with a new idea and brilliant execution.

I see no sticks!

I thank all you warmly for your support of this image. First there is is no visble stick as has been suggested. This is edited strictly for basic editing and if your screen is not calibrated then you will detect a flury of blurred streaks. To force this blur into absolute black would endanger the quality of the image even further. Bad calibration equals bad picture.

To answer msieglerfr: I come here to learn and no image decently presented warrants my one. I do not ever give ones. Since I am here to learn I always try to figure how the image was accomplished. You must remember that although we all have basically the same tools, we all find creative ways to use them. If your intent was really to learn then I would gladly show you the original. Instead you appear to come from a different direction. Look at my port and you will find more images that will give more doubts.

It's really unfair how a shot like this is not a ribbon winner.

In reponse to msieglerfr: Shame on you for scoring it a 1, apparently you understand nothing about multiple exposures, you did not have to expose your ignorance like that.

In response to Librodo, I gave 1 (no shame with that), and I ask the picture to be DQ. I would like to see the orginal picture.

Where is the "stick" that people keep mentioning?
I don't see it.

10 ones. It is ridiculous. This is a difficult shot to exceute and you succeeded. I second Leslie's suggestion. Those who gave out ones should be named.

what is it with the 1's, we have to put a stop to this.

i have an idea if someone gives a one others should be able to see
who it is.

Wow! 17th place! I had this one picked as a clear cut, no brainer ribbon winner! Congratulations on a top 20 placing. .but it sure should have been higher!!

Woosh! Great capture of movements! I only wonder about the stick (growing out from the egg just before smashing) which I don't really understand here. The composition, colours, wow factors are anyway spot on.

Probably not an easy shot, but don't get the purple on the falling egg, and on principle I am marking down every egg image in this Challenge as something just broken and not "already broken". Cliche...although yours is less cliche than most.

Best broken egg shot in the challenge, even if it doesn't quite meet the 'find something already broken' bit! Clever work.

Wow, looking forward do reading about how you did that one, great exposure, I'd give it an 8, minus for taking picture of something that's not already broken ;)

Wow! How on earth can this be done in a single shot? I can only guess at multiple exposure but I think this is a fun picture as well as intriguing compositionally.

overall not a bad shot. But, the challenge states take a photo of something already broken, not break it and then shoot it.

Hi. Cool effect. Would be nice to know how you acheived it. Not sure it fits the challenge description though, since it isn't something already broken.

If this is a legal entry I'm very impressed - how long would it take to make a multi-exposure photo with the same egg in it 7 times !? One minor criticism - perhaps a bit more saturation to brnig out the yolk and red background.

Incredible take. How many retakes did you do?

Not really 'already broken', but I won't let that influence my vote.
