I've always loved Konador's (and others) picture so I'd wanted to try a shot using a filter like this for a while and when I came across a filter in a shop reduced to £2 I thought now would be the time to try!

The plan was to take the picture and convert it later to be red. But I decided it looked better blue, representing coldness, sorrow and broken-heartedness.

Shot in a dark room with a small desk lamp as the only light source.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find its actually quite difficult to break one of these filters!!

Oh nice take on this classic photo!

thanks for all your comments folks.

The biggest problem most of you seemed to have was the choice of book, I did vaguely consider a romantic book but chose my java book for the folowing reasons:

-I needed a nice thick book, this was the most appropriate book I could find
-I don't own any romantic books
-I thought it was pretty apt, that me, a lonely single guy at Valentines spends time with programming books rather than reading love poems

What a great take on a well-worn dpc image - nicely done 10

Great idea to break the filter, I also love Konador's Shadow II entry. I have tried this subject and my experience is that it's not worth to make it tilt a much (because of the round filter having a feeling of rolling away), I would rotate a bit to the left. I would also prefer a bit deeper DOF to get the bottom of the filter sharp as well - and more contrast on the letters.

same creation i have seen before. so try to do some thing different u always stick with the book im not saying this picture is bad although nice creation but try to do something different 7
02/14/2006 11:11:38 AM
excellent twist on an old standby
02/14/2006 07:16:56 AM
cleaver ! very very cleaver !!!
02/14/2006 12:25:21 AM
What??

That is freakin awesome... I never would've thought... Very creative!
02/13/2006 10:00:00 AM
much as I like this trick, it has been overdone now - it seems to be used in every competition these days
02/12/2006 10:34:36 PM
lol.
02/12/2006 09:12:07 PM
great idea! love the shot.
02/12/2006 07:29:20 PM
This is technically a very good picture, and it really meets the challenge. But, I'm only giving you a 6 because IMO this picture is being over exploited on this site. This is not a new idea, it has been done several times before on other challenges.
02/12/2006 07:04:57 PM
I suppose everyone has to try this shot at some point;-)
Nice enough, but its running against some much better and original images.
02/12/2006 04:21:16 PM
Great idea reproducing this marvelous shot with a twist. Exposure and lighting not as good as the orginal, but it is of course still a very good shoot.
02/12/2006 03:26:54 PM
Love the shadow making a heart... cool!
02/12/2006 02:57:12 PM
A classic :)
02/12/2006 08:16:24 AM
Nice take on familiar idea. 8
02/12/2006 02:04:37 AM
this shot has been done to death, but I guess this is a different take on the subject, nice shot
02/11/2006 06:13:05 PM
thats really good
02/11/2006 02:02:13 PM
Glad it's not my filter.
02/11/2006 01:17:15 PM
what a surprising result...quite boring text though...maybe find literature that ties in with the concept
02/11/2006 11:18:36 AM
ha ha HA! love this, and on a computer science book too ... ha ha even better
02/11/2006 10:03:39 AM
hehe very nice, though i thought i've seen this same photo with an unbroken lens (maybe that was your picture too !!)
02/11/2006 02:03:18 AM
That's rather creative.
02/10/2006 11:32:49 AM
Nice effect.
02/10/2006 04:38:03 AM
Cool and a bit cliche.. first time i've seen a broken heart one though... but why not use a dictionary open to where you can see the definition for "broken", or a romance novel, rather than a java(?) book?
02/09/2006 11:13:32 PM
All alone and reading a basic Java programming book? ;^) I like your interpretation of this photographic technique. Was this a sacrificial filter, or already on the way to the trash bin (of course you never really know when garbage-collection is going to get called)?

It's contrived, but should do well. Only thing (really!) that might hold this down some is your choice of textbook. He-he.

Good luck in the challenge.
02/09/2006 10:17:04 PM
LOL - Saw this on the DPC How did they do that page. Good try though. Will give you a 6
02/09/2006 08:39:18 PM
This seems really familiar ... interesting use of a concept used several times before.
02/09/2006 06:47:54 PM
You do these shots really well.....
02/09/2006 04:20:08 PM
Very cool effect, would have been better if it wasn't on a programming book! :D
02/09/2006 03:03:46 PM
ripoff of the romance shot of the ring.
02/09/2006 08:56:55 AM
that's a nice effect ;P. how did you bet this idea
*LOL* that book in the background:is it a manual?
good luck for the challenge
02/08/2006 09:07:02 PM
lol, wonder who this' from?!? lol, loved the last one, and i'm sure this'll do great to!
02/08/2006 07:47:51 PM
Nice one!
02/08/2006 04:33:08 PM
WOW
02/08/2006 02:01:31 PM
great thot!
02/08/2006 12:25:11 PM
Now THIS is a clever twist on Ben's original love filter idea! Clever one!
02/08/2006 12:17:50 PM
...and your coding book?
02/08/2006 10:56:14 AM
Cool, but I have seen a very similar shot here twice.
02/08/2006 09:14:24 AM
Nice take on this concept. Might have more impact with a romance novel rather than a text book.
02/08/2006 07:03:21 AM
What people would not do, to get a good mark! ;-)
02/08/2006 04:19:33 AM
reminds me very much of Blue II, still good photo, but not original anymore
02/08/2006 03:41:15 AM
This is beautifully done. However, I would have preferred the ring to be lying on the pages of a romantic love story ("Gone with the Wind" for example)rather than a specialised book.
02/08/2006 03:11:05 AM
I like it - you did good. Some voters may score you down because they feel this is being over used, or another persons idea stolen....but not me. We all learn from what we experience....you have been creative enough to add a twist. I would have tried to find a better book though....there should be a story within a story here by the words shown through the broken heart. (8)
02/08/2006 02:20:22 AM
a daring attempt as this had been used more than 3 times now :)
nice nonetheless, but wish the focus would have been sharper. 8
02/08/2006 01:15:15 AM
THAT is neat.
