 The extreme paleness of my skin in this photo was achieved by using custom white balance set to the colour of my skin for extra contrast.

Great Photo. I feel that you are losing alot of possable sharpness with the shutter speed that you are working. From the info you have given it looks like you are in a low light situation, I feel like you should consider getting a little more light so you can atleast work in the 1/60th range so your sharps will have more sharpness which will improve this photo greatly.
