Elmont, NY 6/11/05 - Quest Star, with jockey Jon Kenton Court in the irons, leads the pack just after the start of the 104th Running of the Manhattan (Grade 1).
This shot was taken when I assisted Eliot Schecter (working for European Press Photo Association) at the Belmont. It was of course a separate race.
Editing - cropping and rotating to attempt to have the back fence look more level.
levels - for higher contrast and brighter colors.
burned in just a tad on the jockey's pants and shirt.
resizing.
duplicate background layer
on the duplicate background layer, used some sharpening, then masked out everything and just brought out the main horse, really concentrating on his head and tongue.

I like this image, and it's bright colors... hope you like it as well.

lol. On first look this is a great racing shot, all the colours, movement and feel, but now I can't help looking at it as if the lead horse is spoiling your shot like the kid at the back of the class photgraph with his tongue out and a stupid expression. Going in my favourites as a funny shot even if that wasn't your intention.
I love horse racing. This horse has got the best expression - and that tongue!! lol
Focus is tack sharp. Colors vibrant yet not over saturated. Composition is strong. Great shooting!
