Asked my son to build something colorful and geometric from magnetic toys.

Shot on black glass with a sheet to diffuse worklights (halogen, one bounced off ceilng, one shooting straight through sheet).

Shot in RAW; straightened and cropped, adjusted levels, curves, shadows, contrast in Photoshop, unsharp mask, resize and save for web.

I shot about 100 photos using various light combinations and placements of the toy. The shapes of the empty spaces seem as important to the composition as the filled areas.

::: Critique Club :::

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

The critique I am doing is for "Geometric"

First Impression - the most important one:
Neat shot .. like the glass .. not sure of the DOF.

Composition:
I like this set up ... it is very centred (but who really cares) ... the mirror effect of the glass is fantastic ... overall a very good photo.

Subject:
Now this does meet the subject ... shape in a toy ... I like it.

Technical (Colour and light):
Its the narrow depth of field that is the issue here. I think that this is a subject where the blurring of the DOF did not work. Really wanted something crisp. This appears to be an issue for a number of commentators.

To grow its vote?:
Wow this is hard .. that was a tough challenge ... I think look at the DOF .. and check and try cropping in different manners ... trying to look at thirds and leading lines for the eye.

Summary:
I think this is cool .. I commend your son on putting together the image. ... I commend you on a good photo ...

If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via the PM system.

Cheers

Kari

Great idea - I think it would have been a stronger photo with a deeper depth of field such that the everything was sharp.

More depth of field would have helped you. Otherwise, excellent.

greater DOF wouldrealy make this pop. Instead it gives the illusion of being OOF

The entire object being in focus would have helped, I think.

bigger DOF would have been better I think... my eyes seem to go round and round the shapes but struggling to find the bit in focus...

i don't think the depth of field blur in the front helps the image

Hey...nice magnets!!!!

Just curious how well your magnet shot is doing? Mine started off at 6.6 but is down to a 5.2

Your's has a lot of varying color. (Mine is the one with the red background)

Very creative. I think the bottom one could be in focus a little more but other than that well done!
