Challenge: Shapes II (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Location: Studio, Vancouver, WA
Date: Dec 30, 2005
Aperture: f/9
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/50th
Galleries: Abstract, Still Life
Date Uploaded: Dec 31, 2005

Five minute setup. I sat the glass on a cardboard tube and placed a white foamcore board behind at an angle (for the gradient). I lit the board with a utility lamp which has a natural yellow tint to it.

Post production is mainly levels, color shift, and saturation. I wish I could fix the pixelation of the stem, but the only way to do it in basic is with gaussian blur and the amount required was softening the upper part too much. Hopefully I don't get canned on that. It looks ok at 1900x1200, but I'm not sure how ugly it will be at 1024x768.

that's certainly unusual shape of a glass, plus good overall color

Based on the thumb, I expected this to be a ho-hum-been-there-and-done-that image. What a pleasant surprise. Colors and contrast help distinguyish it from the genre. Nice crop with thoughtful foreground/background shapes. Great fit for the challenge theme. Very well done. Among my top picks.

Great job on a very difficult light assignment. You've perfectly defined the glass edges to create the shape with NO annoying light flare.

I really like this a lot! I would have cloned out the three marks at or near the top of the glass.

Simple and elegant! As a person that works in the photo industry...I really like color and implied motion. Nicely done!

I'm not sure what's wrong with this photo. Oversharpening? Over-contrast? The jagged lines, color banding, and dirt/imperfections in the glass keep this from being a really great photo.
