Challenge: Shallow DOF II (Basic Editing III)
Collection: Animals in Captivity
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Location: An aquarium at the San Antonio Zoo
Date: Dec 20, 2005
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/60
Galleries: Animals
Date Uploaded: Dec 20, 2005

I got a new flash diffuser that I was experimenting with in a dark aquarium. I had never been able to get a picture to turn out inside an aquarium like that with my external flash. But I think the diffuser worked pretty well. I wish I could have cleaned up a few spots here and there. . .but. . .that basic editing thing.

This is a great shot Sandy I hadn't seen it before. It's hard to take aquarium pictures (we have one) but you've nailed this one especially considering this was basic editing. Well done. Love the background which makes this guy stand out so well.

Congratulations on your excellent finish! This is a great photo full of excellent detail and colors. The focus is spot on. Composition is good. Ratio between subject and negative space and subject placement is perfect. Very well done!

Question: You left this out of the details, what lense did you use?

Very nice shot. Congratulations on your finsh. I was just at the zoo this past weekend trying to get a shot of the same fish. I didn't think of putting the diffuser on my flash. Needless to say none of my shots of this fish turned out.

Just back to add some comments...
What an interesting looking fish! Love the way he's got his fins all spread out... makes for a neat composition. If you look closely, you can see that you used the shallow DOF in this picture, however I think part of that gets lost in the busy pattern of the fish. A beautiful shot, but I think I might have chosen another fish in the tank for this particular challenge. Good luck! :)

Beautiful Lion fish (?). The DOF is spot on in this image. I'm surprised you were able to get through to this little guy with no blur of motion at all :)

clean the glass before you take shots like this ;-)
Grats, anyway. I like the way you use DOF to show the entire fish in a fair amount of sharpness (with exact focus on the face) and to hide background in the necessary amount only. Key words were 'entire' and 'necessary amount'.
