Challenge: The Letter B (Classic Editing)

Location: Chester Zoo, UK
Date: Jun 25, 2003
Aperture: f2.8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/64s

Haven't given this challenge any thought at all this week - I've been on holiday and it's been sunny so I've been shooting for myself. Strangely, 6 days of shooting produced very little beginning with the letter B! In the end it was either this or a BMW.

Shot on a trip to Chester Zoo in the Black Rhino House.

Cropped right edge only to get it into print ratio.

Greets from the Critique Club:

And I get another of your photographs to critique - the fates must be smiling on you. I disagree with the charges that the shadows were to dark or this photo was a stretch for the challenge. I think it fits perfectly and is well exposed.

I'm not a great fan of the subject matter, but technically it's a great shot. The composition is good and the post processing is non-evident. Why doesn't this engage me tho? I think I'd like to see more eye contact between the viewer and the rhino in back. I guess the picture feels a bit static to me. Besides that I can't offer much criticism - sorry!

Thanks for all your pics, and I can't wait to see what you add in your profile.

Super lighting and point of view make for excellent tones and an engaging photo! 10

You have crammed in an awful lot of detail into 150kb. It`s a cracking photo but i can`t help but think you have played on the title to fit the challenge. I`ll give you the benifit of the doubt. 10

For some reason pictures on DPC look much darker than what they look like on your own system. This is something to take into account for the picture you submit. The shadows on this picture are far too dark to my taste. I imported it into PS and pulled up the gamma to 1.20 with a much better result. It turned out to be a very nice picture indeed.

Bit of a stretch I think to use the color as the "B", although legitimate, just didn't move me.

Great detail and color. Would've liked to seen this exposed just a little more. The heavy shadow in the bottom left is a little too heavy.

There's a bit too much shadow on the main rhino, so I can't see much detail in it

Well exposed to capture the skin

really good angle, the light seems a little soft

Wow, this could have been a prize-winner, but it needs the title to make it fit into the challenge. Great composition. The border works well. The animals' textures have been captured effectively. 7

The look so peaceful when they're sleeping.
