This was a really hard challenge to come up with a shot for. I was doing a stock 'person holding christmas present' shot then started playing with a mini soccer ball. This was a crop from one of the shots i got. This was done indoors with a blueish-greyish background and the 580ex on camera and the 430ex from the top right as the slave.

PP - crop, selective color, usm, ni

Greetings from the Critique Club! : )

First impression upon viewing this image: "gee, he looks so calm for being about to get hit on the head with a soccer ball!"

In terms of composition, I like the position of your subject in the frame, I like how the soccer ball is cut off, I love the eyes...how they're looking up for the ball. I think that previous comments about the static feel of the image are accurate, though. I wonder how a longer exposure would have turned out...adding some motion to the ball descending. I also wonder how a different expression would have worked on the model's face...that anticipation for impact. The background works well, and gives the impression of the shot being taken outdoors.

The lighting also implies that the image was taken outdoors...nicely achieved! I wonder how this would have looked with a bit of fill light or bounce for the left side of the image...just to soften those shadows just a bit.

Another thing that keeps demanding my attention is the size and position of the soccer ball. It appears to be behind the subject's head. If the ball were positioned over or slightly in front of the subject's head, the ball would appear to be more in scale with the subject. But then, you'd probably have some shadow issues which would require some lighting changes, and that could be a pain, too. I do think that the ball coming more from in front would made this image more powerful. That, and the facial expression.

It's not a long critique, but I hope this information is helpful! If you have any questions or comments regarding this post, please feel free to PM me!

Cheers to you, and see you 'round the site,
Jeannel

I think these are exactly the types of pics, the too early/late challenges were supposed to be about, most people missed it. This is one of the few exceptons. Good job. One of my tops.

Should have used a larger soccer ball.

Finally a shot that I can understand what the subject is supposed to be. The timing is very good, and the lighting and background are as well. 8

4 - One of the very few who 'Met the Challenge' (my interpretation at least) quite well, it was not easy. Criticism; difficult to comment, given the nature of the Challenge. perhaps the composition/crop could be improved, perspective perhaps, so that 'the face' is not so dominant in the frame - but again, difficult to comment.

One would say that the player looks at another thing which the balloon, it east can be because of the prospect. There is not much emotion on the face of the subject, one would think that for him it is an obligation to pose. Thus lack of life.

great idea. It would be cool if it looked like the person was in mid-jump. Kinda' looks like a guy just standing there as a ball is thrown over his head. But I love the idea.

Excellent take on the challenge theme. The player seems a bit too static, I wish there was a little more energy in this shot. Overall though, very well done.

What does this have to do with "too early?"

Shame you couldn't get some emotion in his face. It feels a little static and really should have a bit more dynamism. Good theme though
