A challenge where the title is big. Went out and shot this on the last day of the challenge at a local park. I love these mushrooms, but they are wicked hard to photograph. Anything done below was not done to the mushroom as any manipulation would blow the detail.

Post-processing:
Adjustment levels for layers, contrast and saturation.
Dodge and burn to focus on the mushroom.
Clone out a few pine needles close to the mushroom.
Resize, neat image layer (erase over mushroom), USM

I have no problem with a ambivalent relationship to the challenge in this picture...... this is quite a good specimen view, it shows excellent scale to an ample natural environment. fyi 5

I gave you a 5 (mainly because of your out-of-the-box thinking... otherwise I probably would have scored it lower). I did get what you were going for somewhat. I'm not one who needs to be hit over the head with the idea as I usually get these "out-of-the-box" submissions. I just didn't feel you pulled off the idea you were going for well. Had I not read your post I never would have know the object this was growing on was a tree as it is just not evident here (it really looks like dirt). I think composition needed a little improvement. Perhaps shaving off a little of the bottom (particularly the right) to make it feel less centered. I know you felt the additional wood took from the overall impact, but i would still like to have seen it. It might have helped people understand what you were going for better. Finally, there just wasn't any "Wow" factor to this one for me. I give my highest marks to those I feel met the challenge and are still interesting enough for me to want on my wall. This just didn't fit the bill for me.

I rated this image high on technicals, low for meeting the challenge, and medium for appeal. Final score - 6. Why? Technically its sound. I like nature shots and macro shots so the appeal was there, but not over the top. As for meeting the challenge, it doesn't scream adulthood to me. Lifecycles maybe but adulthood is a stretch. I see beginning and end, but not middle. Sorry!

I got here from your thread. Personally if I could have voted, this would have gotten.. and 8. I'm sorry but I dont see the dead log (you mentioned) probably because the green mould covered it completely, and the mould LOOKED like they were growing on damp rocks instead of a dead log. I love the lush greens and the stood out mushroom though. And your good control and use of DOF really makes this piece stand out. Too bad most of the voters cant agree with me. Definately not a less than 5 photo, you got robbed!

This is a beautiful pic! It must have been difficult to get the exposure just right. Do not be discouraged by the score, it does not really mean anything.

I wrote the comment before I saw who the artist was - DrAchoo you should know how DPC works by now!

I loved this picture. Kind of out of the box as Rikki said for most voters to get the connection but this was one of my 2 10's. Your colors and the damp woodsy feel is perfect.

Doc I think this image was just way too out of the box IMHO. I scored this a 5 through technical merit. However, most often times, the DPC voter looks at the image and tries to tie it into the challenge. If none is seen, as I did, a low score is inevitable. This happened to me a few times (one being in the Room challenge). Photos that are technically sound , IMHO, do not deserve a score lower than a 5. But that's just me. It seems to be that by the resounding number of votes that are sub-5, most people thought the same way - that this image does not tie into the challenge description. I believe this is too metaphoric and thus suffered in the end.

A beautiful sharp shot, but I'm not sure what this has to do with the challenge.

Very nice picture but I am having a hard time connecting the title. I assume I am missing something so it didn't affect your score. Love the greens here.

Kind of nice, but doesn't show me much but an adult in bloom.
