Breakin' the rules, shooting into the sun, my mare pauses before getting up post-roll. She still has a suckling foal, and this was a nice break without her nearby. They roll because it feels great though it can keep the insects off too. Grey horses have a knack for turning themselves other colors. We had terrible gnats that month, and they are quite visible in the bigger versions of this image.

Sonnet by DianaB written for this image!

Life’s tribulations sometimes get us down
creating worries, which burden the day.
Our dark thoughts will furrow our brows; we’ll frown
or be distressed and sad, or cause dismay.

Often, it seems, we are shadowed and jaded
by problems and grief, or riddled with pain.
We can be faceless, lonely, degraded,
dusty, decrepit and selfish, or vain.

But when we smile a smile for each other,
lift up a heart, share a pleasure or gain,
give words of warmth and light to another
then life is loving and worthwhile again.

The sun will shine, the gloom will be shifted.
Sorrows forgotten; moods will have lifted.

This is astonishing. I can feel the horse with my hands as I would a dog in this almost doglike or domestic sit. At the same time the horse is about to rise and go into the starry/gnatty circle of light, another dimension.

Ohmygoodness! That is truly one of the most striking horse photos I've seen. It is so unique. So dramatic. And the horse is so freaking beautiful! WOW! It is going straight to my favorites!

I love this image, the flare is a wonderful touch; it almost looks like a stage or circus tent effect..beautiful composition.

This is nice, but I can't help thinking that it would be even better in color. I like the 'flare' effect in it too, even like to see 'more' of it, ie: uncropped, if possible. I also think the 'gnats' add a good element here. Like the angle (although an even sharper/ground up one would possibly be even better), especially how the sunlight is highlighting the mane, 'whiskers' and dust.

Stunning.. I love that there is a silver lining of the sun on your mare's face and body.. its like she paused to stare into the sun.. Gorgeous.

Amazing lighting on this one! I'm so envious of the horse photography opportunities you have.
