This is a very good portrait. I hope you are not offended by the fact that "I" feel that this pose is too mature for this child. That is just my personal opinion. Other than that, the photo is excellent. It does seem a little dark, but considering the challenge that you entered...it makes sense.

Great shot. Remind me of playing dress up as a child. Beautiful focus on her eyes.

Hello from the Critique Club!

I have studied your image and have the following to offer:

Composition/perspective - this is excellent compositionally - the tight crop really works around her face, the bit of shoulder showing, distance from the subject. Well done! The focus is perfect for this shot as well. Her positioning follows the rule of thirds well for the strong points of her face - the eyes and her smile. With her expression this has a very sophisticated feel. The mood of the shot draws you right in. Well done!

Color - b/w, the black and white processing really adds strength to this image. The soft shadows on her face and shoulder allow for a nice transition from the light to the darker side. The lighter shades of gray keep the mood of the shot.

Lighting - very well done. There are no harsh areas in this image at all. The detail in the face is not hidden at all by dark shadows. Both eyes are clear and the detail in the features is excellent. The reflections off the pearls are just enough to accentuate and not become distractions. The dark is not too dark and the light is not too light.

Challenge requirements - this is an excellent example of using a single light soiurce to its fullest advantage. Very well placed and just the right intensity. This meets the challenge requirements in excellent fashion.

Overall/my opinion - Wow! This is such a nice portrait and an excellent image. I am not sure why it didn't do better with the voters. Technically this is nearly flawless. Your subject is very expressive and the camera seems to do her justice. Composition and pose are very strong. I hope this ends up hanging on your wall somewhere.
