Thanks for the comments. There seems to have been pretty big disagreement on the whole selective desat thing, which I find interesting. Partially desaturing the image (as one commenter suggested) wasn't really an alternative here since the out-of-camera colors were just nasty beyond repair.

Love the selective desat. Great shot...focus, composition, and fits the challenge. Really well done.

this image (IMO) is hurt alot by a bad editing choice...that would be that of desaturating everything but the reds and yellows....other wise i feel it has a verry effective grayscale and fits the challenge well.
thats my 1 gripe.

i usually don't like selective saturation, but it definitely works well in this one..

I like the sun flare and dab of color

Interesting shot. not keen on the desat though, it makes the colours that are left look over-saturated IMHO.

Selective desaturation can be a powerful compositional device, but this looks like a "because I can" use of the technique and detracts from the image. I think that partially desaturating the color on the rest of the image (rather than removing it entirely) would have directed the viewer's attention without making the technique itself the focus.

like the use/disuse of color....makes for a unique addition to this. great job! :)
