Challenge: Self-Portrait Revisited (Classic Editing)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S602Z
Location: Bathroom mirror
Date: Jun 14, 2003
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/25
Galleries: Portraiture, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Jun 13, 2003

I thought I'd go for something a bit different to the normal "happy" style of self portraits. I stood in front of the bathroom mirror having an "argument" with myself. Then converted pic to black and white, boosted the contrast to insane levels (to bring out the wrinkles ;) and dropped the brightness to give sense of anger/foreboding and to bring focus to the teeth. Anyway - don't know if it really worked - but this is me :)

WOW - I'm so happy :)
Thanks for all the great comments. This was my first challenge entry and to come 17th on my first go was a great achievement.
I'm puzzled by the big difference in high and low scores
Twelve 10's and six 1's - I would have loved to have got a comment for any of the 1's or 2's to find out why this didn't meet the challenge.
Any ideas, please post them here

WHOA!!!!! Chill out!!!!!!!! Take a deep breath and count to 10. It's going to be alright. LOL! Actually, this is one my favorites. I like the extreme levels. It works well with the black and white.

I love this picture. Cool teeth. The reflection makes it much more interesting. Good choice to put it in b&w.

I realize that this is suposed to have dramatic lighting, but it doesn't really work for me in this case. I think that the lighting is way too harsh on the right image of you. Also, on the left images shoulder to the left of the photo.
I do think though that it works to have your eyes darkened like this. It fits the theme of the photo. The black gums are kind of disturbing though. Nice to meet you. ~Heather~

Although I think the contrast in the photo is a little too high, I can't help giving it a 10. I love it. You used the mirror/reflection method well, and conveyed so much more emotion than a lot of the entries in this challenge.

Stunning effect with the high contrast. Lots of stuff to look at. But please don't bite me.

The teeth are what makes this shot particularly effective for me. Very effective shot, I admire it's 'edginess'. Effective lighting and shadows. 9

A well composed, grainy shot. The harsh lighting and over-exposure makes it seem like you're in an asylum or something (no offence intended!). Very memorable, however, I'd sack your manager!!

I think a portrait should reveal some character, or emotion of the model, by showing expression in eyes or other facial features. Did your picture accomplish that? Positively!

Lighting:good

Exposure:good

Focus:good

Creativity:good

Composition:good

Background:ok

I bet you had fun with this one.

Whoa man,
Calm down a little. =o) Very in your face. But a little too close for me. Nice Texture, and shadows. But I find your teeth a little too bright.

I really like your choice of high contrast here. Very effective, you really do look pretty angry. : )
