My favorite Smithsonian cover of all time has to be the nautalus. The starkness of the shell against the black background in what inspired this shot.

Tiny level adjustment is all I did to this one.

Honestly, I wasn't thrilled with this shot until I spent two days in airports seeing many similar magazines with covers similar to this one, so I've bumped your score up a notch. Still, I don't agree with your choice of focus; I'd like to see more of the piece in focus. I do like the unexpected framing, though.

I have no idea what I'm looking at, but it's interesting.

A beautiful subject with wonderful colours and reflective qualities. Focus seems a little soft. Composition is reasonably interesting. 8

I really wanted to give this one a top score, but the focus kept it from getting there. Great subject and look for that mag. 8

Object needs full focus - wider DOF.

Is that a cat hair between the 2nd. and 3rd. holes?

The DOF is too shallow in this picture. Because you used such a simple background I would like to see the whole subject in focus.

Crop it for a magazine and it would be right on.

As the image is already cropped, so its identity is hidden, I need, at least, to see the whole thing in sharp focus

I can easily see something like this on a natural-history exhibit focus in the Smithsonian.

It might be slightly too tight a focus as a further crop would make the object harder to identify, but it isn't out of the question. There's enough colour neutrality to easily allow for the placement of coverlines without ruining the intensity of the photo.

Nice abalone shot. You should take care to remove dust and debris during setup. 5
