 In Pompeii, during the times before the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, there was a thriving busy city where it was usual to eat out at lunchtime. Takeaway food at it's earliest was kept hot or cold in large terracotta jars. These were placed in the holes in the counter which had either hot coals or ice inside.
