Challenge: Conspiracy (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Location: Studio, Vancouver, WA
Date: Sep 17, 2005
Aperture: f/14
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/60th
Date Uploaded: Sep 17, 2005

Step 1: Freeze block of ice size of head
Step 2: Remove from broken bucket (the ice expanded and destroyed the plastic bucket it was in.)
Step 3: Carve with hammer, screwdriver, and hair dryer the reverse contours of a face. Attempt to not destroy block.
Step 4: Take many test shots with myself or my adult sister.
Step 5: Give in to son to allow him to take a try. (Being "in the ice" is really hard. You get big time brain freeze.)
Step 6: Wonder if people are going to recognize son as being the same kid who had his head on the railroad track in Perspective and whether child protective services will be called.
Step 7: Screw it. Going with it anyway. Caden has loved being the subject in both these shots.

Post production: crop, mild levels, big hue shift to give frozen look on duplicate layer, decrease layer opacity to make him look a little alive, erase more of layer around lips and eyes to give them a little life as well, selective color to remove even more blue, USM, dust and speckles to remove a few ice bubbles, more USM, border.

WOW! This is great. Soooo close, but, hey, I'm really stoked about #4, even if it was a low rated challenge. The pic was a blast to do and I could post a few setup shots to give you a better idea of how it's done.

Hmm... Too many sci-fi films for you, my man!

It triggers a memory of a scene from the alien 'invasion' series, with about 25 people looking up out of a pond or lake, and they are all happy to be in there. I suspect that a clone would look asleep if there was one - he looks like he was snap-frozen alive

Nice shot - I would love to see the set up pix for it.

My only concern is that there are some real-life nutters (english phrase) or head-cases, who might try this for real - you just DONT want to give them ideas.

What would you do for a shot about the Resurrection, I wonder? - would love to see it

I think that this picture is VERY CREATIVE and you are just a genius. When I first saw it I was just in shock. At first glance it is kind of disturbing. The blue hue really adds to the frozen look. The topic you chose for the theme didn't really make sense to me. A frozen clone army of children from Canada? I don't get it. Overall I like the picture. I wouldn't change anything. This picture creeps me out.

I didn't realize how much effort you went through to get this picture. Knowing all that I wish it had gotten a ribbon but 4th isn't bad. Fantastic job!

I love it. Guy looks at his son, and thinks "Hey! Have I got a project for you... Wanna look dead?"

By the way, rumors about Canadians taking over the world are totally untrue.

We already have the largest country in the world. If we wanted to do something realy devious, we would just do something to make our winters less cold like oh, I don't know, maybe warm up the whole globe or something?

And it's not like THAT's going to happen RIGHT?

So...very...freaky... I hope no one got hurt during this photosession! Well to get to the point, this photo is mainly freaky because of the open eyes makes me feel like I am looking at someone that is deceased and even though I know that is not the case it freaks me out a little bit. I like the blue hue on the face, gives the photo a great deal of credibility. Technically very well done and not often a photo gets an emotional response from me so 8 from me.

Freaky freaky freaky. But well executed idea (at least I *hope* you didn't really freeze your son in ice. hahaha.

The purple color really adds to the realistic feeling of this.

I can see this as a shot of a sci-fi or sci-fi + horror movie or the front page of a newspaper or scientific journal. You title tells a lot, but I think it would have been better left for the viewer's imagination (Just a thought). Yes, we are all capable of making up our own conspiracies, but I also understand that it might now worlk on DPC. This is one of my top picks anyway.

What kind of boy are you raising? First he's lying on a railroad track and now he's trying to freeze himself. Well, at least he's cute!!
