CRITIQUE CLUB!

i would really like to see more shots of this man and find out more about his story. as such, this photo is lacking in a few key technical details and that's probably why the score was so low.

the focus is very soft, whether that's because the camera was moved or the photo was blown up i don't know. however, i would like to see this more tack-sharp.

the midday lighting is too bright on the right side of his face and has created a few "blowouts" that distract from the rest of the picture.

everything aside, though, it's a great candid. if it were executed more adroitly, this would be a true treasure.

interesting photo

A nice study but lacking critical detail. Often we expose for the shadow and let everything else fall apart and this is often accepted. The end result here is not favoring the facial detail. The concept was good and composition. Bumping tp 6.

Soft focus seems to be the result of over magnification. Good idea though.

Too washed out although interesting look

Highlights on his left side are blown and distracts from an otherwise nice portrait.

This has such great potential. IT's a shame that it's blurred and overexposed. He has such a wonderful beard and telling face. I'd like to see it larger, tack sharp focused, and softer lighting.

Great shot!

out of focus, poor lighting (entire right side of his face is burnt out (look to the left side of the pic). eyes need to be sharper. overall, colours are muted because of the intense light (assuming sunlight here). ALOT of potential here, but need to use a light disc and some shade to brighten his face and dampen his hair.

I think there is too much contrast in the lighting. The highlights are blown out and it is difficult to see in the shadows.

If your photo was a bit...crisper or a bit more contrast (seems a little muted) I would have scored it higher. I do think the title fits perfectly with the expression you captured though.

this is way too soft. this has the chance to be great if wasn't so cloudy looking

Good shot, the lighting is nice.

a bit pixilated and blown out

I like this--even the lighting works, but I would like to see his face more in focus and the color a little stronger.

Great shot! Its a bit hazy but it works. The light is just a tad strong though, a bit distracting.

This would have been a wonderful shot if the exposure and sharpness had been better. Fill flash would have punched this up quite a bit, there is just too much variation between the highlights and lowlights. It appears that this was underexposed and you tried to bring out the detail in the shadow usinga picture editing package which had just blown out the highlights and left the shadow areas milky and soft. Hope this helps

Excellent concept here - I like the choice of subjects - very interesting face. However, your lighting here is very harsh -too much contrast between the light and dark areas - leaving the brightest areas over exposed with lost detail. Also his face and beard are just not sharp enough.

Great concept but can't tell if you were trying for a soft look or just our of focus
09/12/2005 12:39:18 AM
Wonderful subject, but the lighting is pretty harsh..almost can't see the detail in the mans face. Good luck!
