I was on holiday in Italy this week, and one morning woke at 05:30. Rather than going back to sleep, I took my camera & tripod, and headed off for some good morning photo opportunities. Got loads of great pictures.
This old chap was sitting on the street enjoying the morning calm in Riva on lake Garda.
I asked him if he minded if I photographed him, and shot off a few pictures.

Greetings from the Critique Club!!
What an interesting and emotive portrait. The look on the man's face, combined with the background colors makes me think that he has many stories and thoughts about life. There is a bit of his ear on the right cut out, but nothing bad. The focus is perfect. This is one portrait that you could do so many things with, and I enjoy the way you have made it. It seems to tell a story in addition to just showing a face.
Good Work and keep shooting!!

If only the tongue of white bench weren't there, you'd have a virtually perfect comkposition. It's unfortunate that the ear and the edge of the collar are not int he frame, as well. But a very nice piece of work that I have enjoyed viewing.

Nice composition and light. A tad closer on his face would have made this great. Still I lke it. 8

This is excellent. The contrasts are great, the focus is clear, and even the title adds punch. Well done.

I like the expression you captured in this. The lighting is well done for this type of portrait.

love the pic...however...it feels like you sacrificed the subjet (old man) for the sake of background buildings...cutting off part of his ear and head...great detail on the face

Lovely setting, attractive colors. Great model. The white bench is slightly distracting. Still a very nice capture.

I like this. An interesting person, an interesting place. I like that you kept the background behind him solid, yet included the buildings to show the setting.

I like this photo for a few reasons. Mainly because I want to know how to fuzz out the background of photos like this one. My photo might have turned out better if this happened to my picture.

Very Nice. I like the city effect from behind but the red roof is a bit distracting. Maybe crop that part out. Great Picture.

I'm one who's not afraid to crop into someone's face or hairline... I think it often is to good effect. In this case, you've missed just a "sliver" of his ear which makes it look more accidental than purposeful. So that, is my minor nit. The rest of the image is WONDERFUL. Nice candid expression on his face. Great lighting, excellent use of shallow DOF while preserving the ambience. Good luck in the challenge!

Great Character Shot. I bet this guy could tell a story or two! I like the background also. The windows and doorways in background add appeal to the overall photograph and cements the "italian" look.

Excellent photo. Your subject has character and the background adds to this. The background especially gives the viewer a sense of place and time. Great use of DOF and excellent color control. -10-

perhaps I'm biased because the gentleman in this photo reminds me so much of my grandpa there maybe flaws but I don't see them because of the cord this photo strikes. very nice.

This is a very interesting portrait....the light, the background and the subject. I think I would have preferred him looking at the camera however.

The buildings in the background are interesting and beautiful but I think for a portrait, unnecessary. If you hold a piece of paper over the buildings, just leaving the wall as a background, I think it is a very nice portrait. But that is just me.

Excellent shot. God composition and really nice DOF, IMO. The bright bench is a bit of a distraction.
