Your moment of Critique Club is at hand ... hi Andy.

Damn but Brighton's a great place for photography.

Don't know what to say about this shot - get the distinct feeling after looking at your portfolio that you've done absolutely what you wanted to with it. Not an easy shot with that camera either, eh? :-)

Lots of good stuff - especially like the framing: great sense of the bird having somewhrere to go to. Just enough motion blur n the wings to give that sense of flight - it actually looks like it's gliding, though given the shutter speed I guess it must have been actually flapping it's wings. There's a real sense of strength across it's back too - of the effort required to get airborne.

The black backgound is a great addition: though it looks like you had to put some effort into disappearing whatever was there.

It's good work though: disappointed with 11th?

Bon chance for the future

I was interested in seeing how many spotted the black triangle in the top corner of this ... nobody! It spoils the shot slightly on my monitor.
Very nice capture anyway, and well done on a great score.

I really like how you have chosen to frame this. Gives an even more determined look to the bird I think, because now it has somewhere to go.

nice wingspan, also like that its flying into the shot and not out. :) The background is a vast bit of nothing, but nothing wrong with a bit of negative space.

Great capture, nice composition and contrast. Would have been super to have the entire bird (gull) as sharp as the head appears to be (tough to do though). Super job!

Not crazy about the border, and I'm not sure whether or not I like the totally black background, however the shot is interesting. I like the range of tones on the bird, but don't care for the way the black areas "bleed" into the background. I like the composition very much, and the light on the bird is pretty good. Gave you a pretty high score anyway (9) because I do feel the shot has pretty good visual appeal.

The basic black background really makes this a unique picture. These birds are seen 99% of the time on blue sky or in seascape type shots. This is almost a perfect stop action shot. What really makes this picture is the framing. I might have flipped this photo about the horizon to make it seem headed up instead of down. I think moving from left to right is important from the mind's natural perspective. Nice work.

One of my favourites this week. Good composition and the b&w tone is perfect. So is focus and cropping. I donĀ“t know how you could have done it much better. Meets the challenge very well. Well done and good luck!

I'm not sure how the black backround was achieved but it really makes this stand out! Perfect! 10 -danny

What a serendipitous moment! Gulls are really lovely birds, and you have captured the full wingspan.
