hey sher, is the title from the story 'You Can't Take It With You' were that old rich guy gets his fortune burned with his dead body instead of giving it to his evil relatives?

I think it is actually one of the most appropriate, most people didn't look into this challenge much, just snapped some coins and dollar notes or jewelry. Let me just explain what I think this photographer is saying, because though it is simple, you don't seem to get it. In my opinion sher is saying that it doesn't matter how rich you are, you can't bring it with you into the afterlife. This leaves us to wonder what affluence actually is, is it riches and wealth, or something that costs nothing and yet remains priceless?

Hi Sher, I am not going to vote on this challenge but saw that you entered this photo here.
I'll just copy & paste my pbase comment:

It's almost as if I'm looking at a city of skyscrapers.
A dead city.
Skyscrapers of the Death.

Sher, I love the way how you process your photographs. Besides that, many have content, something to tell. Pleasant compositions and iteresting contrasts.
I've said it before: Simple & Strong.
Please don't read the "Simple" wrong, perhaps it would be better phrased when I say "down to the core of the subject". Yes, that's it.

This photo, such strong contrast between the dark tree vs the bright monuments of the death. Very fitting. The sky brings a welcome break in the scene and is well placed in the composition.

Good luck, I hope you do well. I'd probalbly have given this a 7.5. :)

Nice composition, tones and presentation. Could be a little too heavy on the left hand side but I'll put that down to the ofice monitor!

Very dramatic. Like the light quality. cant ' really tell if it's black and white or color. Nice job.

This doesn't say much to me about affluence, but it's a nice, moody picture.

True True! Great shot! Sky looks overprocessed IMHO.

So very true! I like the image by itself as well as the somber tone you have created. Black and white works very well for this particular capture. I feel that the block wall in the foreground and the trees in the background are a bit of a distraction. Maybe a slightly different angle that would have incorporated less of the trees and none of the block wall would be more appealing. I also feel that it falls short of the challenge. Although the title references the challenge, the photo alone says nothing of material wealth.

Hey, I though I was being original with this idea, but obviously great minds think alike. My final shot is a little different, but a lot of my outtakes are almost exactly this same shot, and as far as title goes, I'm afraid it's going to look like we're a team! I hope you are doing better than I am score wise. :)

You're relying on the title to fit the photograph to the challenge.
08/03/2005 01:49:12 AM
While I understand and agree with your social commentary about affluence, the challenge topic is affluence and as such your image does not meet the challenge in my opinion. The image as a whole seems a little under exposed.
08/03/2005 01:16:26 AM
too much of a stretch...

I like the title and I think it's a nice irony that although you can't take it with you, one guys grave can still be more ostentatious than the next guy's. Nice moody sky and I like seeing the kind of creepy black fence in front.

How funny that two of you have the same title. This is a great shot. I like the filter you used. Nice contrast and the composition is well done.
