jus playin round wif my new twenny-D... ;-)
and damn, it is sweet!

even though i had been experimenting with shooting in burst mode, this was a single click. guess practice and good timing paid off.

i'll really be interested to see how this one scores. does it meet the challenge? yes! are there any technical flaws? none that i can see. is it appealing? well, i guess that depends on whether or not you like baseball... is there a wow factor? maybe not as much as if the ball was in the image... but, all the same, how easy would it be to reproduce this shot? (actually, not rediculously hard, if you're trying...i got two in this one game.)

oh, well, we shall see ;-)

post was very simple: rotated, cropped, slight adjustments for hue/sat & levels, sized, slight usm, and saved for web.

post-challenge notes

this is really kinda funny, how this shot came about. i shot this on a bright sunday afternoon. i lost a freelance opportunity to shoot the friday night game, because the director of photography thought my 75-300mm F/4 was too slow. he was right. even though i got a few shots like this with bright sunshine, it's still not the same as if i had been shooting with, say, a 75-200 F/2.8L IS USM. that would have made a HUGE difference, at least to me, and maybe to those trolls who scored this a 1-2-3 ;-) not that i would ever call them out in a thread, but really, what a joke. oh well, i got a couple new PB's out of this, so i can't really complain.

thanks to all of you who commented and voted--it is greatly appreciated!!!

ANYONE who would vote this a 4 or lower is a serious troll! Just jealous that it was most likely going to trash their own picture by comparison. This is so awesome, and maybe because I love baseball, but it definitely has a wow factor for me!!! Fabulous job!!!!!

According to your comment you took this in one shot (no burst). That's the kind of training I would love to get. Though I am interested in other type of sports the idea of single shot is amazing. Good work. Congrats on the top 20!

Skip - you're the man! Congrats on 13th with this well-timed, single-click, awesome-even-though-no-ball-in-sight, kickass shot! What kind of league is this that can't afford anything but balsa wood bats?? ;-)

edit: forgot to mention that I'm glad you spelled the sound effects correctly or I'd a bumped you down a point. :)

8 - Excellent opportunity capture. Criticism; sharper, bolder (colors and texture) and 'if only' to capture that bat in absolute focus, would make this a better photograph for me. A different crop, 'if only' to get the catcher out of frame, but pretty impossible from this angle. Superb action shot and I think, aside from a tighter crop, you have likely done the best you can with the opportunity you were given. Possibly, black and white, but I am sure the bat would be lost even further. Good title. Good shot. Memorable.

Cool moment to capture. The image feels like it is just a bit overexposed, or the bright/contrast tweaked too bright, or maybe sharpness or something tweaked a bit too hard. I wish I could explain this better. I adjusted my monitor just in case, but the grainy glare on the ground and other light spots in the photo actually became a bit distracting for me.
