I had real trouble deciding on either this picture or a semi-B&W version, but the colours here won out overall.

Greetings from the Critique Club
By Inspzil

Composition - Very well composed photo. The trams are a different avenue of this challenge which surely works in your favor. The colors are pretty good. I'd have saturated the grass just a little more and maybe even lightened it up just a little for better contrast purposes. The way you framed the subjects by leaving the fences in is terrific. I'm unsure about whether I like all the water in the background. It's color is a little dull but I keep looking at it and don't know if it's better in the pic or better omitted. A little is necessary, but I don't know if you need it all. I don't know if the dock contributes in any way to the pic at all. The few people in the mix makes it more real and I think that adds to the photo's appeal.

Technique - Great DOF is definitely the key to this photo's success. One tram clear and the other blurry might've meant imminent doom to this photo. Nice work there. They are pretty well exposed, brightening them up just a bit might help a little, but they are fine as is. I think if it were my pic, I would either brighten it up just a little to make it a bit more upbeat and vibrant, or went the other way and desaturated it and added a little yellows and reds to make it a semi-sepia picture. I think you could get away with the b&w or sepia of this because it would look period. It would drastically change the mood of the photo too, which could be beneficial, but there's no guarantee there. I think its all personal preference and either choice would be sound for this photo.

Overall - Nice image. Well framed, good exposure, you did the right thing by retaking this a couple times. Just really a nice piece of work as your score indicates. There must have been a few decisions to make about this photo as there are many ways you could portray these and they would probably all work. This one did pretty well so you can't argue with that!! good job and good luck in the future. - Inspzil

I just wanted to send out a quick thank you to all the people who commented on this picture (and of course all who voted) in case any of you come back to look at it again.

So this is the tramway in Saltburn (on the North East coast of the UK, near Middlesbrough - for anyone outside the UK who is interested), I came back to shoot it 3 times trying to get the framing just right. I auto adjusted the levels and cropped it slightly to get out a bit of scaffold but it's basically as shot.

Again, I just want to say thanks for the great comments and I hope I can do as well in the future.

Vertigo! Your photo is pretty powerful! I'm getting dizzy just looking at this incredibly steep incline. Very cool!

Nice image. Good composition. I like the way that the image captures both land and water. The railway also adds nice texture, as well as the ripples in the ocean. Good job.

This is one of the two photos that I rated highest, a 9. It has many good qualities, but the most gripping is the sense of spatial depth it conveys.

Interesting perspecive on this one. Nicely composed and good colors, too. Too bad it was such an overcast day. High marks for the photograph, though.

I like the angle and capture. Steep incline for a tram or train the pier heading out adds to the image.

The angle is great, the colors appealing, and the composition is wonderful. The uniqueness, to me anyways, makes this a very unusual and intriguing image. I certainly get the feel of being in one of those cars.

Very neat view on this, and the colours on the trams are nice and dark. I would have cropped more of the sea out just so that all attention would be on the trams and we'd feel even more like we're in one of them about to roll down that very steep hill!

fun photo, but the colors are a bit soft. i think increasing the gamma and saturation a bit might have helped it look more 'alive'. nice perspective.
